Additional Information for Faculty Mentors and Students
This portion of the website is primarily intended for faculty mentors. It consists of basic guidelines and references faculty mentors may find useful.
Learning Contracts & Syllabi

Mentors should familiarize themselves with their student's learning contract and be prepared to report grades versus the classes listed on the contract.

Mentors have the responsibility to review and approve the syllabi created for the student classes.

All learning contracts and syllabi should be written to proper academic and grammatical standards.

Sample learning contracts and syllabi can be found on the documents and forms page.

Filing Grades

Mentors should notify CES of student grades via email. The emails should be sent to the standard CES email address (listed on the Contact Us page) with a clear subject-line identification of the student. The body of the email should contain the student name, the class name, and the final grade.

Re-submissions for research papers

A mentor has the option (at his or her discretion) to allow a student to correct, improve, and re-submit a research paper for a potentially higher grade if the initial research paper is graded at a "B" or lower. This is entirely at the mentor's discretion.

If the mentor encourages the student to do this, and if the re-submitted research paper earns a higher grade than the original, then the mentor may increase the grade to a higher level, providing the newly issued grade does not exceed a B+.

This option is typically reserved for situations where the number of mechanical or grammatical errors is high but the core content and analysis is good. This allows the student to improve writing mechanics and style for an increased grade.

A student is responsible for submitting his or her best work for a final grade, and a student should not expect this option to be provided by the mentor. If the mentor feels the student did not perform due diligence on the original submission or feels that the student submitted a draft-quality research paper, expectations should be re-communicated and the mentor may well choose not to allow a re-submission.
